CHS 245: History of the Americas

Finding resources by chapter

When you start digging in and trying to find more resources about the topic of your chapter, it might be tempting to just pop in to OneSearch or Google and search for something like (socialism America) or (women United States), and while that might work in some cases, it's also likely to turn up a lot of unfocused resources that might not help you with your research.

Unfortunately, even adding a decade or century to your search, like (women United States 1800s) might not help because of the different ways documents might choose to represent years and dates.

What can often be more helpful is glancing at the chapter to identify specific events, books, or names to follow up on.

In this example, if you are researching chapter 6 on women and feminism, you might choose to do some further research on Anne Hutchinson. One way would be to access OneSearch and do a search for her name in quotes to get the exact phrase "Anne Hutchinson."

From there, you can see the books we have in the library, or narrow your results just to articles or other content types, or add additional search terms for a narrower topic.
