CTVA 412: Classic Filmmakers

Course guide illustrating resource formats, search strategies, and source evaluation.

Search Biographies and Filmographies

Use OneSearch Advanced Search to improve the relevance of your results. Biographies and biographical entries will contain the person in the title. Use the drop down menu to search all titles containing the person's name. If your results list is long or the names are common, try the menu to select "contains exact phrase" to limit the results. It is also possible to perform a combination search to clarify the type of information you need. In this case add "biographies" to the second search bar and assign it as the subject. In most cases, this will limit results to books, chapters, or articles containing histories of the person queried.

In this example, we are searching for biographies of Elia Kazan.

For filmographies, swap the term "biographies" for "filmography" and assign it as the title. If you need more results remove the Title assignment and change to Keyword.

In this example we are searching filmographies of John Ford.

Assembling a Bibliography

To build a bibliography around a director and/or film, use Advanced Search to search both the director AND the film. Since you want to control your results for relevance, try assigning these terms as Title searches, Subject searches, or a combination of both. If your results are too few, change Title and/or Subject to Keyword.

In this example we are searching all items about Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

You can refine the types of sources using the Resource Type filter on the left of your results list.

Once your results are refined, open them by clicking on the title to view the catalog record for more information (or view them directly online), then use the citation tools available to copy and paste the citation in the style required for your course.
