Autonomous Systems

The NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) is a voluntary, confidential, non-punitive, safety reporting system that receives safety reports from pilots, air traffic controllers, dispatchers, cabin crew, maintenance technicians, and now UAS operators. Anyone involved in UAS operations can file a NASA ASRS report to describe close calls, hazards, violations, and safety related incidents.

The National Center for Autonomous Technologies (NCAT) is the first national advanced technological education (ATE) center in autonomous technologies. NCAT is crafting, adapting, and implementing educational resources and serves as a resource hub for evidence-based research on the knowledge and skills needed to meet workforce demands while increasing the quality and diversity of the highly skilled technical workforce.

From self-driving cars to camera-equipped drones, the capabilities of unmanned systems are rapidly advancing. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey has been investigating the use of autonomous survey systems to support hydrographic survey operations since 2004. The goal is to explore how autonomy provides more efficient and effective acquisition of environmental data to support NOAA’s navigation products and services.

The AV Hub highlights examples of recent automated vehicle (AV) events, funding opportunities, reports, articles, and other resources from U.S. DOT’s partner agencies across the U.S. Government. The AV Hub reflects U.S. DOT’s commitment – as outlined in Ensuring American Leadership in Automated Vehicle Technologies – to facilitating coordinated efforts and ensuring a standardized Federal approach to American leadership in AVs.

The Autonomous Vehicle branch of DMV oversees and regulates autonomous vehicle testing and deployment on California roads.

The Drone Safety Team (DST) is an industry-government partnership committed to ensuring the safe operations of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
