Accessibility: Tips and Bad Examples

(a work in progress)

Structure: Headings and Lists

Headings

Headings are used as visual markers for the structured sections of your subject guide and are detectable by screen readers, so use them.  You can assign a section subtitle to Heading 3 or Heading 4 using the Normal dropdown menu in the rich text editor.

  • Don't use Heading 1 -- this is automatically assigned to the title of your guide page.
  • Don't use Heading 2 -- it is used by the box title.
  • Headings are not obligatory, but can be useful in structuring large blocks of content.  Always start with Heading 3.

Lists

A list is a logical construct.  Use the lists tool in the rich text editor to create numbered and bulleted lists.  A screen reader won't detect your list if you number it manually.
