Library Instruction Liaison Outreach Guide

This guide is intended to offer suggestions about library instruction liaison outreach efforts.

Library Instruction Liaison Roles & Tips

Liaisons Instruction Liaisons help connect faculty and students with resources needed for teaching, learning, and research, customized for the needs of each specific department or program. As a Library Instruction Liaison to a CSUN Department or Programs, library faculty are encouraged to seek ways to effectively serve the students and faculty in their assigned programs in the area of teaching and learning. As you carry out your liaison roles each academic year you will probably want to:

  • regularly reach out to department and program faculty to offer your availability to create and lead instructional sessions, synchronous and asynchronous, to students enrolled in your liaison departments and programs (i.e. communicate more than just sending an email before the start of a semester or during the first weeks of a semester)
  • make sure to introduce yourself and/or send a communication (email) about library updates that align with collections and services that support courses
  • notify your liaison department/program faculty about library resources (databases, collections etc.) that may support course offerings and student learning outcomes in the major/minor
  • remind faculty how students can contact you for individual instructional support via email and your research consultation appointments

Liaison Instructional Outreach Strategies

  • Identify and connect with key dept/program people (Department Chairs/Directors/Deans)
  • Communicate at least once a semester with key members of the dept/program  (Chair, faculty, etc. )
  • Be available to faculty/student groups/individuals
  • Provide timely updates about significant changes in library resources/policies
  • Monitor department listservs/newsletters, if possible
  • Attend department meetings/events, as able/invited.
  • Attend student research symposiums, performances, graduations to stay engaged with department
For Example: Consider Volunteering to Be A Judge at CSUNposium 2024:

    What is the CSUNposium?

The CSUNposium, also known as the Annual Student Research and Creative Works Symposium, is a student conference featuring oral and poster presentations. The purpose is to showcase excellence in scholarly research and creative activity conducted by CSUN students across all academic disciplines.
